Wiggles and Squiggles t/a Wandsworth School: The LSEN School of Choice
Wiggles and Squiggles was founded in 2007 by Sue Fowlds with a single child. Operating from her home in Randpark Ridge, Sue built relationships with the therapists in the area, talking to them about how she would like to begin utilising the skills, principles and teaching methodologies she experienced during her six year special needs tenure in the United Kingdom. By 2008, Sue had grown Wiggles and Squiggles to ten children with another ten on the waiting list. Not only was it time for new premises but two more teachers and support staff. In January 2009 we embarked on a new adventure that has seen Wiggles and Squiggles grow year on year to the school it is today.
In 2010 we fully integrated the Montessori (3-9 year old) Curriculum into the school, along with all the equipment and very passionate, creative Montessori Directresses. In 2012 we became fully registered with the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) as an Independent Combined School for Learners with Special Educational Needs (LSEN). In 2014 we have 40 children with a capacity for 50, we have five SACE registered teachers and nine support staff members creating a minimum of a four children to one adult ratio, for one on one tutoring and group sessions. Our phenomenal Directresses use their vast experience to bring life to learning, all the while helping the children to learn the societal norms and grace and courtesies.
Weekly meetings ensure good practice is shared between all staff and we work as a team to help grow every individual in the school. Ongoing training, both in-house and externally, keeps our incredible staff team up to date and in touch with equipment and teaching methodologies. The knowledge, compassion and love of the children transcend every environment, with each staff member having a role in facilitating the child reaching their individual goals set out by the teachers, with crucial input from the parents and therapists.
The children are exposed to many opportunities one would expect from a top notch school, over and above the tailored curriculum, including: concerts, sports days, music lessons, dance and ball skills, theme-related visitors like Paws for People Therapy Dogs, reptile shows, and a Christmas time puppet show! They learn about both Natural and Social Sciences – all being brought to life in a fun and relevant way (a special family trip to the botanical gardens for an evening frog hunt) to reinforce life skills, independence and above all, open the way for meaningful communication.
Wiggles and Squiggles is in the fortunate position to have independent therapists from very reputable practices operating from the school. Every child benefits from this incredible team of physios, occupational therapists and speech and language therapists, because they are always willing to offer valuable advice in the classroom to improve upon a skill or elicit a specific response relating to communication and fine or gross motor development. The multi-disciplinary approach to setting our children’s targets has an incredible impact on the children’s ability to learn in the class and transfer their knowledge into their home life. The advantage of having a team of private practitioners benefits parents on many levels. Parents are not bound to a particular therapist – facilitating strong relationships. The parent is only billed for sessions that the child receives instead of subsidising a therapist’s salary – keeping school fees lower. Most importantly, having so many enthusiastic specialists who are passionate about their professions keeps Wiggles and Squiggles at the forefront of special needs trends in communication, occupational therapy, physiotherapy and behaviour management.
Wiggles and Squiggles is a wholesome, affordable private education facility that nurtures friendships and learning in real-life situations, where we believe in every single child
